5 Things

  1. Back from Africa.  Great trip, positively surreal at times, being in a completely different culture. We were welcome for dinner at homes every night but one, and think that people really extended themselves for us.  My only crisis came when I reached banana overload.  We always were given a banana at breakfast, and then at dinner they were served both fried and fresh, and you were expected to take both.  But really overall, I have no complaints.  Only have to figure out now how to not just make it a trip, but remember what I saw and act.
  2. One thought I have is to pursue a mosquito net fundraiser at school.  I plan on talking to a student who also went to Africa and see if she is interested in doing something along those lines.
  3. Tomorrow it is time to restart several things:  back to school, back to workouts, back to drinking water on a regular basis, back to counting calories.
  4. My goal tonight is to clean my room.  Doesn’t it seem like I am always attempting that?Would also like to make a french bulletin board.  I have all the materials, just need to do.  I’d like to have it up to get some lists on.  Then to actually do the things on those lists.
  5. As it begins tomorrow, I would like to be happy in my work.

  1. Hi Chrissie!  I see you peeking in from Rome over there on the side bar.
  2. It’s 1:28am and I am done with the roster and thank you notes and putting files on the jump drive for the Altar Guild Brunch tomorrow.  The key lanyard is in the wash, so the only thing left on my list is “remarks” and I am not sure what I am going to say, but let’s hope the Lord hits me with something coherent, say around 8am tomorrow, while I am having my coffee.
  3. Went to see a good student (high school and college) performance of King Lear tonight.  Creative staging and they really knew their dialoge – meaning not just memorization.
  4. Did I mention that I got promoted to Turtle Level 2 at the gym and it like ta killed me?  I think I might have.
  5. Melissa (sister-in-law) surprised Michael (nephew) with a surprise visit.  I picked her up at the airport, and she snuck into his room where he had just gone to bed.  He was super excited to see her!  It was great!

  1. Am worried that my “sassy number” though shortened in straps, now feels awkward.  It is a little too wide in the bodice.  I mean, it looks OK, I think (party anxiety setting in, so all bets are off) but eventually I think further alterations are in order.
  2. Almost all the altar guild paperwork is ready.  must finish (start) the roster tomorrow.
  3. And get a haircut, though this has nothing to do with Altar Guild.
  4. And get a spare key made for the aumbry.
  5. Big moment today at the gym, as Captain Asskick promoted me to the treadmill routine “Turtle 2.”  It wiped me out, but so did “Turtle 1″ back in the old days (june).  I also have, if you look very closely, some sort of dent in my arms, that could be the start of what might be called “guns” by those in the workout community. Woo!

Filed under: Chores, Scary Workout Challenge, Summer Activities, garden! — Eleanor @ 10:33 pm
  1. I went early to water the garden, the thunderstorm not really having done what was needed, and a little girl and her mother were sitting in the gazebo.  The little girl came up and made conversation and helped me water the plants, and this was very pleasant.  If only I could import a cow or two to graze the soccer field.  Then I would feel very farmlike.  Perhaps I should bake a pie and place it in the gazebo to cool.
  2. I’ve  commandeered another plot.  Shameless. Tomatoes!  Strawberries! (For the pie!)
  3. I think my vacation is kicking in.  I find myself wandering about the house with a completely blank mind.
  4. Captain Asskick has been doing a good job, and I am feeling pretty good, even doing pretty good, sometimes very good about eating my vegetables (sans being fried in deliciousness)  I’ve even impressed myself about going on my off days and doing “The Turtle” on the treadmill.  It’s sometimes hit and miss on what is on the three televisions, though you can pretty much see law and order on the one television, I skip the news one in the middle, and the last seems to be things like Dr. Phil, or other talk shows, but today was veggie tales, and I’ve got to say, I enjoyed that.
  5. The laundry situation?  Stil out of control.

  1. Today an early meeting with someone doing a security check on a friend. (I’m an excellent character witness…”Convicted?  No never convicted.”) Then a visit with Michael and Mommy and a the formation of a plan to go to a movie.  Got the gym workout out of the way, and now am relaxing, with violet settling in for some laptime while I type.
  2. Our J2A pilgrims are off on their trip today, and can be followed here.  The twitter feed is on the left sidebar.
  3. I’m filling up my new little notebook with projects for summer: wrapping up AG stuff and cleaning house are dominating so far.  I am sitting in my comfy room, and once I get all the laundry put away, I think it will be revealed that I have way too much yarn, and need to get back to knitting.
  4. Got to see the awesome AT the other night now that she is back in town.  Here is to the first of many pedicures!
  5. Garden updates.  Things are growing, but some creature has been having a nibble.  I think of Peter Rabbit, hopping over and taking a look, lipperty, lipperty, lippet.  Pretty amazing how fast things grow.  I bought a book about gardening in small spaces, and now I want to talk the Fairlington Arbor association into making the area out back a community garden.  I mean, I love my little garden at school, but it is kind of a pain to drive across town!

  1. Once again it is almost 11 and I have a trip tomorrow, and nothing is packed.  OK, no more posting until I am ready to go…time now…10:42.
  2. Alright so it took to 1:08
  3. and now it is 2:07.  I suspect I am not very good at this sort of thing.  I did fold alot of laundry and write a letter to the Altar Guild, and earlier in the evening a recommendation for my student teacher.
  4. It is rather shocking that the whole effort resulted in three identical blouses(different colors) two identical sweaters (different colors) and two similar skirts and pants.  And assorted Miscellany.  It is still all too much and all too little.
  5. But I am off!  A few hours sleep and too the plane.  I’ll try to Twitter on the trip.  Huzzah for vacation and adventure!

  1. C has been busy…or not perhaps, but has found this very lovely artistic statement on the Inaguration.  I like it because it is clear she went to museums etc, and it reminds me what treasures we have here and how important history is.
  2. There is also this photo “meme” (all about me – Me! Me!)  I don’t often do these but I tried this one.  You are to go to your photo folder, pick the sixth folder and the sixth picture in that folder.  And here is what was there.  My beloved big brother in Afghanistan.  A good picture.  He is happy.  He’s not a gunner, but they were all taking a turn.  I think the story is not so important, but the reminder, for me, that we must pray constantly, and without ceasing.
  3. Cousin Richard is now in Iraq,  so that is 2/3 of our generation galivanting about.
  4. Constantly.  And without ceasing.
  5. To dos today:  Pray.  Buy knitting basket for the day school auction.  Finish the schedule.  Vacuuming. Laundry.  Hmm, perhaps I should go put those items on the task list in my new crackberry.  WHAT?  You got WHAT?  I promise, it is needed to replace my dead palm pilot.  And I already turned the email feature off.  (but it sure is red and cute.  Like a leetle car.)

  1. Ok, ok, I haven’t posted my inagural adventures yet.  Ali is doing a good job.  I promise it is coming!
  2. For example, if there a a little snow day coming my way I am all over that for an activity.
  3. Along with cleaning my room, working on the Altar Guild schedule, and watching 24, which I missed tonight.  So it would be a full day.  I’d also have a nice coffee while reading the paper.
  4. Paul, Pennie and I went to see Slum Dog Millionaire tonight.  Very good.  I liked it alot.  So eye opening about Indian, in terms of seeing the cities.  We talked about the slums when studying Mexico city.  I may have to show a few selected clips next year.
  5. The annual chili bowl was last night at church.  I helped with the counting, but I should have let one of the newer parishoners who was helping run out with the number to announce it.  Spotlight hog.  Another reason I need to be sent to my room for a snow day.

  1. Oh how we struggle through the last days before the break.  The kids are happy and full of energy, and the teachers are just done!
  2. I’ve received several charming gifts from the children, my favorite a homemade card and ornament.
  3. Went for a holiday pedicure with AB and Ali, then we went and had fancy cocktails at the Ritz and then shopping.  Lots of fun!
  4. I feel completely unprepared.  Some of my gifts may come post Christmas.  I still need to finish blank for blank and blank and there is major construction to be done on the blank for blank.  I hope blank likes her blank, I was able to work a great deal on that.  I still need to purchase the blank for blank.
  5. Made cookies for the custodians tonight and will buy bagels for the sociology class, then 8th grade art project for the next four periods, then classes are cancelled for the volleyball tourney in the afternoon.  Don’t be in front of my car at 4:06, because I will run yo ass down ass I head home! (stopping at the blank store to buy blank’s blank.)

  1. Had a nice chit chat with my big brother yesterday, that was very nice.  It’s been a long time since we’ve gabbed on the phone.
  2. I put in a solid 4 hours at school today.  Went through both World Geography boxes and sorted and out it all away. (Almost.  I have to put the map units away still.)  Tomorrow, the ancient civ, then the other boxes(oh yes, there are many) for the rest of the week.  If I could get everything done this week and have next week for planning that would make me feel pretty good.
  3. I went to see a movie today.  The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.  Though all of the live actors were pretty lame, I have to give kudos to the Skelton Army, the Terra Cotta Warriors, and most especially the Yeti, whose appearance to save the day in the Himalayas was excellent.  The Skelton Warriors were good slapstick, as one accidentally knocked anothers head off, then turned around and stuck it back on, and the Terra Cotta warriors, thought led by the bad guy, and fairly badass themselves, were able to be busted like a flowerpot.  Literally.
  4. Poor Ali had to hear this over and over during coffee time, but as great as Michael Phelps is, he has 8 races to get his picture in the paper.  Does he really need to have his picture on the front page and teh front of the sports page every day?  Let’s try to spread the joy around, huh Washington Post?
  5. Only two weeks left of vacation.  Must enjoy self and reach inner peace and outer organization.
